The Internal Bomb: The Perceived Terror of what the Arts Therapist will ignite in a High Secure Environment

The use of Art Therapy, Dramatherapy and Music Therapy towards the diffusion of explosive material in the therapy space.

The Arts Therapists will use the presentation to convey their experiences of playing in the dark or of sitting with the patients live potential for explosion, in order to encourage relational security, tolerable intimacy and foster a therapeutic space which is safe-enough for serious play. Using their own media as a live tool, they simultaneously consider the role of the high secure environment in this often charged and fragile psychotherapeutic relationship.

Afternoon presentation:

Developing guidelines for Arts Therapies Service provision and practice in forensic settings

This half day session will outline the process of developing evidence-based guidelines for service provision and clinical practice for the Arts Therapies in forensic settings. It will include thinking about critical appraisal, clinical consensus and systematic review, these being key activities within the guideline development process. There will also be a workshop element that will require participants to do a little bit of preparatory work.

She teaches across a range of art therapy and dance movement therapy programmes at Goldsmiths, focusing on the teaching and supervision of research. Her research interests include the development of an evidence base for art therapy, the interface between the theories and practices of visual art/visual culture and the theory and practice of art therapy and the development of 'art therapy' in different parts of the world. She has published widely, her most recent publications being 'Art therapy research and Evidence-Based Practice' (Sage, 2006) and 'The use of artworks in Art Psychotherapy with people prone to psychotic states.
